Our lifestyle is rooted in sustainability and respect for the environment, ensuring that the ocean's beauty can be preserved for future generations.

Indonesia is the worlds largest shark fishing nation. Currently, sharks are being fished at unsustainable levels throughout the country, particularly due to the importance of shark fisheries as livelihoods to many layers of Indonesian society. Although Indonesia has already implemented regulations to protect certain sharks on a national level, adopting these regulations on a smaller local level has proven to be a big challenge.

Sharks are caught for a variety of different reasons such as profit (fin trade), food, cultural reasons, and subsistence livelihood. Shark fisheries, both target, and bycatch play an extremely important role in the socio-economic status of many vulnerable fishing communities within the country.

Here at Found At Sea, we are dedicated to supporting impactful shark conservation organisations and projects in Indonesia.

thresher shark project indonesia

We have been proud supporters of the incredible Thresher Shark Project Indonesia since 2019.

For over five years, Thresher Shark Indonesia has been working in Alor to safeguard thresher sharks while supporting local communities. Their latest research, published inOryx (Cambridge University Press) and led by Co-Founder Rafi D. Shidqi, shows that this approach works.

By introducing alternative livelihoods, communities are catching fewer sharks and earning more income. Using the Theory of Change framework, they were able to track real impacts on both wildlife and people, proving that conservation and community prosperity can go hand in hand.

This is more than research—it’s a blueprint for how people and nature can thrive together.

Over the years, thanks to your support, we have been able to donate thousands of dollars and continue to support their alternative income program for Thresher shark fisherman in Alor island.
