Get the popcorn out - it's time to get motivated to save the ocean.
Time's are hard and socialising is non existent . Everyones priority right now should be doing whatever they can to #FlattenTheCurve so that life can continue as normal sooner rather than later. With the majority of us currently working from home and or in self isolation / practising social distancing - its a great opportunity to slow down, breathe and catch up on a lot of stuff you normally wouldn't have time for. Us ocean folk are also probably not able to go to the ocean as much as we would like these days , so here is a list of 10 Marine Conservation documentaries to watch during self quarantine .
1. GHOST FLEET
An eye opening heart wrenching documentary about modern day slavery on Thai fishing boats. It follows one woman’s quest to end slavery at sea. Extremely important film for everyone to watch - especially for those who still eat supermarket seafood! ( Can purchase or rent on iTunes USA )
2. SEA OF SHADOWS
A thriller like marine conservation documentary following a group of dedicated scientists and journalists as they try to save the Vaquita dolphin from going extinct in the Sea of Cortez . Action filled marine doco - highly recommend ! ( Can purchase or rent on Amazon Prime USA )
3. ARTIFISHAL
An eye opening film by Patagonia about the damaging effect the salmon framing industry has on wild fish populations and our oceans . Very important film to watch especially for those of you who like to eat salmon. ( Watch full film on YouTube for free )
4. LONG GONE WILD
a riveting documentary revealing the brutal truth about the ongoing trade in wild-caught orcas, highlights the intensifying controversy over confining cetaceans to barren concrete boxes in marine theme parks.
5. CHASING CORAL:
A documentary about the plight of coral reefs world wide due to coral bleaching. Follow a team of dedication scientists as they try to raise awareness about how global warming and ocean acidification is killing our reefs .
6. DEEPSEA CHALLENGE
Ocean exploration documentary following Jame’s Cameron’s journey to the deepest part of the ocean in his submarine.
7. THE LAST OCEAN:
‘Chilean Sea Bass’ is actually a fish from Antarctica called Toothfish. The Last Ocean follows the race to protect the Ross Sea in Antartica from our insatiable appetite for this fish, and raises the simple ethical question: do we fish Earth’s last untouched ocean or do we protect it?
8. THE END OF THE LINE:
The film was the first major documentary to look at the impact of overfishing on the world's oceans. The collapse of the cod population saw the end of 40,000 jobs, the bluefin tuna is being hunted to extinction, and it takes five kilos of anchovies to produce one fish farmed salmon.
9. SHARKWATER 1 & 2 :
Legendary shark conservationist Rob Stewart uncovers the elusive shark fin trade in his first film. His second film is a legacy towards his dedication to protecting this species.
